NEW DELHI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Maharashtra fell slightly on Monday due to tepid demand. In Uttar Pradesh, prices were largely steady, traders said.
Prices fell by INR 10 per 100 kilogram in Maharashtra amid sluggish demand. "Altogether, demand is poor. But, mills have to sell their quota, already some 10 days have passed in the month," said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. A lot of sugar stock is left with the mills, he added.
Mills across the country had 13.43 million tonnes of sugar as of May end, according to the government. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. The Centre has set the domestic sugar sales quota for June at 2.30 million tonnes. Though the quota is 2.1% down on month and 10% down on year, the market deems it adequate for the month's demand.
Prices were largely steady in key markets of Uttar Pradesh, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "Demand is slowly picking up, but nothing substantial," Gupta said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Steady at INR 3,850-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Steady at INR 3,850-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 10 at INR 3,962-INR 4,052 per 100 kg in Mumbai, Maharashtra
--Down INR 10 at INR 3,800-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur, Maharashtra
At 1448 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 1% at 16.67 cents per pound. Sugar prices rose slightly tracking crude oil prices. Higher crude prices prompt mills to divert more cane toward ethanol production rather than sugar, thus reducing sugar supplies. However, expectation of global sugar surplus in key producing countries, including India, for 2025-26 are weighing on prices. End
