MUMBAI – Chana prices are expected to remain range-bound in the short term amid a slight uptick in demand, reduced arrivals, and continued availability of imported yellow peas and chana, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association's weekly report released Monday.

Seasonal demand during monsoon and preparations for the upcoming festival season in August may lend support to prices. Prices could also rise due to a decline in arrivals of the legume and low stocks with the government, the association said.

However, the rise in prices could be limited because of the ample availability of yellow peas and the extension of duty-free imports of the same, it said. Many traders and importers also have stocks of imported chana, which could prevent a further rise in prices, it said.

Prices of chana showed mixed trends in the week ended Saturday. Prices dipped in most spot markets due to low demand for processed dal, or chana dal, and besan. However, prices remained firm in markets such as Delhi, Jaipur in Rajasthan, and Gadag in Karnataka due to need-based buying by local millers, the association said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 150 from the previous week to INR 5,800-INR 5,850 per 100 kilogram, according to the association. Prices in Delhi rose by INR 25 from the previous week to INR 5,775-INR 5,800 per 100 kg.  End
