NEW DELHI – The global FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 106.3 points in May, up 1.4% on month amid strong demand for basmati rice ahead of Eid-al-Adha, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Front-loading of Thai Hom Mali to the US following the 90-day pause to the additional US import tariffs in early April also supported prices. On year, however, the index was down 22.6%.
Among the four major rice indices, three rose from the previous month, while the Glutinous index was largely steady. The Aromatic Index rose 4.6% on month in May, and Japonica rice index was up 1% on month due to robust Japan sales. Persistent high domestic prices in Japan also fuelled expectations of additional imports, the report said. Indica prices strengthened in May, though by only 0.7%.
The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice was $368.7 per tonne in May, lower than $370.0 per tonne in April. The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety rose to $362.4 per tonne in May from $352.3 per tonne in April, and that of the 25% broken variety from the country rose to $414.8 per tonne from $397.0 per tonne.
The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $366.8 per tonne in May from $361.3 per tonne in April, and that of 5% broken non-basmati rice rose to $381.8 per tonne from $375.5 per tonne. India's exports to African buyers supported white rice prices, the report said.
However, the price of 5% parboiled rice from India fell to $376.7 per tonne in May from $397.6 per tonne in April. "..progress of the rabi and summer harvests weighed on parboiled quotations," the report said. The price of pusa basmati was unchanged from the previous month at $875.0 per tonne in May.
Pakistan's 5% rice was unchanged at $392.3 per tonne in May. The price of the basmati rice variety from the country was at $1,032.5 per tonne in May, up from $955.5 in April. End
