NEW DELHI – India's production of key minerals and non-ferrous metals grew steadily in March and April, according to a release from the mines ministry. Iron ore production increased 5.7% on year to 25.9 million tonnes in March. Manganese ore output grew 9.7% on year to 390,000 tonnes. Zinc concentrate production rose 5.5% on year to 19,000 tonnes in March.
Notably, iron ore accounts for 70% of the total mineral production in value terms, with the country's iron ore output reaching 289 million tonnes in the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). The growth in mineral production is a positive indicator for the economy.
According to provisional estimates, April saw a steady rise in the production of these minerals. Bauxite production increased 13.9% on year to 2.13 million tonnes. Limestone production grew 1.2% on year to 40.5 million tonnes. Lead and zinc ore production rose to 1.27 million tonnes, up from 1.24 million tonnes in April 2024. Zinc concentrate production increased 7.7% on year to 14,000 tonnes.
The non-ferrous metal sector also witnessed growth, with primary aluminium production in April rising 1.5% on year to 347,000 tonnes. Refined copper production increased 15.6% on year to 52,000 tonnes in April. India, the world's second-largest aluminium producer and fourth-largest iron ore producer, is also among the top 10 producers of refined copper in the world, as per the release.
The continuing rise in iron ore production, along with higher copper and aluminium output, indicates sustained economic activity in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, construction, automotive, and machinery, according to the release. End
