MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur were mixed while prices of masur were steady across spot markets of the country Wednesday, traders said. Prices of chana fell in some markets and were steady in others due to negative market sentiment following the government's decision to extend the duty-free imports of yellow peas, traders said. Prices of tur were steady in some markets and up in others due to some demand from millers, they said. Prices of masur were steady in the lower range as the government wrapped up its procurement in most states, they said.

CHANA prices in Delhi fell by INR 100 from Tuesday to INR 5,700 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. The market is still reeling from the government's decision to extend the duty-free imports of yellow peas till Mar. 31, he said.

This marks the latest extension since the 50% duty on yellow pea imports was lifted in December 2023, with the initial deadline of March 2024 being pushed ahead multiple times. In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), the country imported 2.16 million tonnes of yellow peas, up 85% from the previous year. Imports of yellow peas stand the highest among all pulses. Yellow pea is used as a cheaper alternative to chana.

Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,800-INR 5,825 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,500-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, traders said. About 13–14 trucks laden with 20,000-25,000 kg tur each arrived in the market on Wednesday, they said. Though there is some demand for the legume, it is not substantial enough to raise prices, they said.

However, prices are likely to rise temporarily in the short term as millers will begin purchases for filling up their processing pipeline for the rest of the month, they said.

Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, rose by INR 48 from the previous day to INR 6,000-INR 6,916 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals rose by 779 bags to 4,812 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,250-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, said Kochar. Prices have settled in the lower range after the government wrapped up its procurement for the 2024-25 rabi season in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, he said. Prices had risen a few weeks ago, supported by the government's procurement of the legume at INR 6,700 per 100 kg.

Prices of the moti variety of masur at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 5,700-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, the India Pulses and Grains Association said. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 6,200-INR 6,500 per 100 kg.  End
