Maharashtra summer crop final acreage up 19% on yr, maize up 63%

MUMBAI - The sowing of summer crops in Maharashtra touched 514,523 hectares as of May 27, up more than 19% on year from 431,189 hectares a year ago, according to the final summer acreage report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage rose nearly 63% on year to 99,268 hectares.
The area sown under paddy rose to 171,901 hectares from 167,720 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under bajra rose to 40,563 hectares from 36,864 hectares last year, while that of jowar fell to 35,666 hectares from 37,657 hectares a year ago.
Moong acreage in the state so far was 20,456 hectares, up from 14,390 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under urad also rose to 2,052 hectares from 597 hectares last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds stood at 139,826 hectares, up from 109,062 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut was 103,975 hectares, up from 79,680 hectares last year. Sesame acreage also rose to 30,278 hectares from 22,414 hectares a year ago.
Summer crops are grown for a short period between the kharif and rabi seasons, with harvest done between April and May. Besides rice, sesame and groundnut are grown during this period. Other major summer crops in the state are fruits and vegetables such as banana, pumpkin, and tomato.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 30.4% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 22.4% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
