MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell in spot markets in the country Monday as the government extended duty-free imports of yellow peas till Mar. 31, traders said. Prices of tur were down, while moong were steady, they said. Prices of tur were weighed down by subdued demand and a rise in arrivals, they said.

CHANA prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh fell INR 50 to INR 5,900–INR 5,925 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices are weighed down by negative market sentiment following the government's decision to extend the duty-free imports of yellow peas, he said. "The market was expecting at least 10% duty on the imports of yellow peas," he said. Yellow peas are used as a cheaper alternative to chana.

After lifting the 50% duty on yellow pea imports in December 2023, the Centre had given a reimposition deadline of March 2024. However, the deadline has since been extended multiple times, with the latest extension coming on Friday. In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), the country imported 2.16 million tonnes of yellow peas, up 85%. Imports of yellow peas stand the highest among all pulses.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell INR 25 from the previous week to INR 5,725–INR 5,750 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices at Solapur in Maharashtra fell INR 100 from INR 6,500–INR 6,900 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. About 22–23 trucks of 20,000-25,000 kg each of tur arrived in the market on Monday, he said. Prices are down due to sluggish demand, he said.

Prices were also weighed down as farmers are offloading crops due to the risk of spoilage during the monsoon, he said. Exposure to moisture during prolonged periods of rainfall could degrade the quality of the legume, lowering its value.

Prices of tur at Kalaburagi in Karnataka fell INR 130 from the previous week to INR 6,000-INR 6,909 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals rose by 1,744 bags to 5,571 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MOONG prices in Solapur were steady at INR 7,000-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, said Sanklecha. Prices are steady in the lower range due to a lack of fresh cues, he said. Prices of moong fell previously due to a rise in arrivals of the summer crop, he said, adding they are likely to fall again in the short term as demand is expected to drop amid a steady flow of arrivals, he said.

Prices of moong at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 6,500-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals rose by 2,000 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).  End
