MUMBAI – Urad prices are expected to remain weak due to steady imports from Myanmar and Brazil, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday. Arrivals of the domestic summer crop are also seen weighing on prices, the association said.
The early arrival of the monsoon has increased the chances of farmers shifting from one crop to the other, the association said. The impact of the early onset of monsoon on kharif urad sowing is unclear currently, it said.
Prices of urad fell in the week ended Saturday due to weak demand from millers, the association said. Neither the worries about potential damage to crops due to bad weather in Madhya Pradesh, nor the hike in the minimum support price of urad by INR 500 per 100 kilogram to INR 7,800 per 100 kg lifted the market sentiment, it said.
Regular imports of cheaper tur from Myanmar and new shipments from Brazil kept prices under pressure, as per the association. In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), urad imports rose by 31% on year to 820,259 tonnes, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
In the week ended Saturday, prices of urad in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, rose by INR 200 from last week to INR 7,400-INR 7,450 per 100 kg, according to the association. Similarly, prices of imported urad in Chennai rose by INR 325 from the previous week to INR 7,125-INR 7,150 per 100 kg. End
