MUMBAI – Prices of tur are likely to rise in the near term as demand is expected to pick up, the India Pulses and Grains Association said. Stocks with millers are depleting, and they might start purchases soon, it said.

With the mango season drawing to a close, consumption of tur is seen rising, so millers may shift back to tur again. Earlier, many tur traders shifted to dealing in mangoes as the latter had more profitability.

The market will keep an eye on tur sowing in the upcoming kharif season. Early or poor rains could impact planting, but late rains could also delay the sowing process, the association said. The India Meteorological Department has forecast above-normal rainfall throughout the country at 106%, with an error margin of 4%.

The market will also monitor the imports from Myanmar, as June deliveries of the shipments are due in the first week of the month. In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), imports of tur rose 59% on year to 1.22 million tonnes, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Prices of both domestic and imported tur dropped in the week ended Saturday as trade slowed down and buyers remained cautious ahead of the monsoon. The recent hike in the minimum support price, by INR 450 per 100 kg to INR 8,000 per 100 kg, is likely to boost kharif sowing, the association said. As such, many farmers offloaded their stocks in the market to raise money for kharif sowing, adding pressure to prices. Demand from millers remained weak due to cheaper offers for tur from Africa, the association said.

In the week ended Saturday, tur prices in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, dropped by INR 123 from the previous week to INR 6,000–INR 7,039 per 100 kg. In Akola, Maharashtra, prices declined by INR 125 to INR 7,000–INR 7,025 per 100 kg, the association added. End
