MUMBAI – Chana prices are likely to remain low in the short term due to steady domestic supply and ongoing imports of yellow peas, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. Demand from stockists and millers is likely to remain weak as they have enough stocks of the legume, the association said.

The outlook for chana in the medium term will depend on imports of yellow peas, used as a cheaper alternative to chana. On Friday, the government extended duty-free imports of yellow peas till Mar. 31. Earlier, the government had allowed duty-free imports of yellow peas till May 31. Russia is expected to produce 4.40-4.50 million tonnes of yellow peas this year, while Canada forecasts production at 3.13 million tonnes, the association said.

For Australia, the top exporter of the legume to India, chana production is estimated at 2.32 million tonnes, which could rise to 2.70 million tonnes if the weather in September is good, the association said.

Prices of chana fell in the week ended Saturday as millers bought less due to weak demand for processed chana, or chana dal, and besan. Prices also dropped as market sentiment was hit by the government's decision to extend duty-free imports of yellow peas.

Prices were also weighed down by a rise in arrivals, especially in Madhya Pradesh markets, as farmers offloaded their stocks to raise money for kharif sowing, the association said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 75 from the previous week to INR 5,950-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 75 from the previous week to INR 5,850-INR 5,875 per 100 kg.  End
