Rabi sowing in Telangana up 18% on yr as of Wed, maize up 36.4%

MUMBAI - Farmers in Telangana have sown rabi crops across 8.01 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up more than 18% from 6.77 million acres a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's normal acreage for the season is 6.35 million acres, the report said. Maize acreage rose 36.4% on year to 913,621 acres.
The area sown under paddy rose to nearly 6.0 million acres from 5.20 million acres last year, the report showed. The acreage under jowar also rose to 367,642 acres from 237,804 acres a year ago.
Chana acreage fell to 222,772 acres from 238,509 acres a year ago, according to the report. On the other hand, the area sown under urad rose to 56,273 acres from 35,030 acres last year. The total area sown under all pulses was 310,783 acres, up from 303,806 acres a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was 315,879 acres, up from 272,154 acres sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut rose to 251,272 acres from 202,638 acres last year.
Tobacco acreage rose to 19,132 acres from 10,099 acres a year ago, while that of sugarcane increased to 17,353 acres from 6,138 acres last year.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 353.96 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 223.21 billion cubic metres a year ago, the report showed.
Rabi crops in Telangana are sown between October and December after the monsoon, and harvested between February and May. However, sowing started late in Oct-Dec last year because of delay in the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon that delayed the harvest of kharif crops. End
