MUMBAI – Wheat prices fell in key markets in the country Wednesday as the government re-imposed limits on the quantity of grain that can be stocked, traders said. Prices of maize were slightly down due to low demand, while those of rice were steady, they said.

Prices of WHEAT at Indore in Madhya Pradesh fell INR 10 to INR 2,730 per 100 kg, according to local trader Gaurav Kochar. Arrivals remained stable at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). Wheat prices at Vashi in Navi Mumbai declined INR 50 to INR 2,750 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. Prices of wheat in the benchmark market of Delhi were steady at INR 2,770 per 100 kg, according to traders.

Wheat prices are likely to fall INR 50 per 100 kg from the current levels this week, Aniket Mehta, a Rajasthan-based trader, said. Multinational companies have bought more wheat during the rabi marketing season and the government wants them to sell it in the market as it is cautious about inflation, Vora said.

Traders expect wheat prices to remain range-bound with a slight negative bias in June as the government has allowed states to lift grains for three months in May due to storage shortage. Also, the government is likely to start open market sales of wheat soon. Informist reported Wednesday that the government may start open market sales of wheat from as early as June-end or early July. The government has the bandwidth to sell at least 6 million tonnes of wheat even if the allocation for the public distribution system is increased in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), a government official told Informist.

Prices of MAIZE at Indore fell INR 10 to INR 2,225 per 100 kg due to higher arrivals, Kochar said. He expects soybean farmers to shift to maize in the upcoming kharif season due to better returns in maize. "Soyabean prices are trading INR 500-INR 600 below the MSP (minimum support price)," he said.

The government on Thursday announced a 7.9% increase in the minimum support price of maize to INR 2,400 per 100 kg. The government has also increased the minimum support price of paddy common and grade A varieties by 3.0% each to INR 2,369 per 100 kilograms and INR 2,389 per 100 kg, respectively.

Prices of basmati sella RICE variety in Vashi market were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of broken rice were also stable at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said.  End
