Maharashtra summer crop area up 20% YoY as of Mon, maize up 63%

MUMBAI - Sowing of summer crops in Maharashtra rose over 20% on year to 514,561 hectares as of Monday from 427,923 hectares sown in the same period a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage was up over 63% on year to 99,236 hectares from 60,739 hectares a year ago.

 

The area sown under rice so far was 171,920 hectares, up from 167,720 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under bajra rose to 40,563 hectares from 36,864 hectares last year, while that of jowar fell to 35,662 hectares from 37,191 hectares.

 

Moong acreage was at 20,441 hectares, up from 12,068 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under urad also rose to 2,040 hectares from 597 hectares last year.

 

The total area under all oilseeds was 139,901 hectares, up from 108,824 hectares in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut rose to 104,051 hectares from 79,484 hectares a year ago. The acreage under sesame rose to 30,277 hectares from 22,370 hectares a year ago.

 

Summer crops are grown for a short period between the kharif and rabi seasons, with harvest taking place between April and May. Besides rice, sesame and groundnut are grown during this period. Other major summer crops in the state are fruits and vegetables such as banana, pumpkin, and tomato.

 

The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 29.2% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 24.1% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
