MUMBAI – Wheat prices rose marginally in Rajasthan's Kota on Tuesday as arrivals fell from the previous day, traders said. Prices of basmati rice rose slightly, while those of other varieties of rice and maize remained steady, they said.

Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Kota rose by INR 20 to INR 2,480-INR 2,490 per 100 kilogram as arrivals halved to 20,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from the previous day, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals in Rajasthan are significantly down due to the ongoing heatwave in the state. The India Meteorological Department has predicted heatwave conditions to continue over parts of western Rajasthan till Wednesday.

Prices of wheat at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 2,740 per 100 kg, according to local trader Gaurav Kochar. Arrivals remained stable at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). Wheat prices at Vashi in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,800 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. Prices of wheat in the benchmark market of Delhi were also steady at INR 2,770 per 100 kg, according to traders.

Wheat prices are likely to correct by INR 50 per 100 kg from the current level during this week, Rahul Chauhan, director, IGrain said. However, the demand is likely to rise from June due to the monsoon, supporting prices, he said. Low arrivals in the market are also likely to support wheat prices, he said. Wheat prices are unlikely to rise sharply this year as there is "sufficient supply", Chauhan said.

Prices of basmati sella RICE variety rose by INR 100-INR 200 at INR 6,100-INR 6,200 per 100 kg due to more demand, Vora said. After the disturbances between India and Pakistan, rice exports by Pakistan have taken a hit. "Pakistan is our competitor when it comes to basmati and now it is out of the race," Vora said. He expects prices of basmati rice to increase further due to continuous export demand. Prices of broken rice were also stable at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said.

Prices of MAIZE at Indore were steady at INR 2,235 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are currently at their lowest and there is no scope for them to fall further, he said. He expects prices to rise by about INR 200 per 100 kg from the current level as the rabi and summer maize arrivals are decreasing.  End
