MUMBAI – Mustard prices rose in Jaipur while those of soybean and groundnut were steady in Indore and Gondal, respectively, traders said. Market participants do not expect major improvement in soybean prices in the near-to-medium term owing to oversupply in domestic markets and sluggish demand.

Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were up INR 50 at INR 6,675-INR 6,700 per 100 kg, according to the Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of the seed across the country increased by 15,000 bags to 475,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

"During the start of this week, mustard prices have seen some support due to improved buying by millers ahead of the festival season," said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader from Rajasthan. However, the improvement is at a slow pace on account of the high moisture content in the new crop, he added.

The trend in prices of mustard is expected to be bullish in the long term and is likely to touch INR 7,050 per 100 kg, said Indrajit Paul, head of research at Agrocorp International.

GROUNDNUT prices, including those of poor, medium, and best varieties, were steady at INR 4,250-INR 5,600 per 100 kg at Gondal in Gujarat, said Dilipbhai Ramani, a local trader. "Rain-damaged arrivals and sluggish export demand are currently not supporting oilseed prices," he said. He also does not see groundnut prices rising in the long term due to expectations of a bumper crop this year.

SOYBEAN prices in Indore were also steady at INR 3,750-INR 4,150 per 100 kg, said local trader Narendra Porwal. Arrivals decreased by 100 bags to 2,600 bags. "Prices have been under pressure due to oversupply in domestic markets and cautious demand by millers," Porwal said. Moreover, many farmers are now shifting to other more profitable crops, he said, adding that farmers are discouraged by the latest price trends and hence not willing to cultivate most oilseeds.
