NEW DELHI – The government has procured 562,564 tonnes of tur as of Tuesday, more than 42% of the sanctioned quantity of 1.3 million tonnes for the 2024-25 rabi season, a senior government official told Informist. "Given the market trend, we were anticipating at least 500,000 tonnes of tur procurement, but with the market ruling below the minimum support price, we were able to procure more," the official said.
The government is of the view that it will be able to procure about 600,000 tonnes of tur by the end of the procurement season. Procurement operations are likely to continue till the first week of June, the official said. "Arrivals are slowly falling. We will procure for two more weeks to support farmers as crop prices are ruling under MSP and then stop."
The minimum support price of tur for the 2024-25 crop year is INR 7,550 per 100 kg. Prices at the key market of Solapur in Maharashtra were at INR 6,500-INR 7,050 per 100 kg on Monday, significantly below the minimum support price. Prices in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, were at INR 6,000-INR 7,176 per 100 kg.
At over 210,000 tonnes, the highest procurement so far was in Karnataka, followed by Gujarat at over 150,000 tonnes and Maharashtra at over 100,000 tonnes, according to data shared by the official. Procurement in Andhra Pradesh was also significant at 71,000 tonnes.
For the 2024-25 rabi season, tur is being procured under the price support scheme through central nodal agencies such as the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd. and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd. End
