MUMBAI – Mustard prices rose in Jaipur while those of groundnut fell in Gondal, traders said. Soybean prices were steady in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Market participants do not expect major improvement in groundnut prices due to weak export demand.

Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were up by INR 25 to INR 6,625-INR 6,650 per 100 kilogram, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across India decreased by 450,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

"Mustard prices could gain further support during mid-June due to increased festival demand," said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader from Rajasthan. Currently, demand from millers have improved. However, the high moisture content in the new mustard crop is limiting further gains in oilseed prices, he added. Mustard prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,250 per 100 kg with arrivals at 20,000 bags, he said.

GROUNDNUT prices, including those of poor, medium, and the best varieties, were down INR 50 at INR 4,250-INR 5,600 per 100 kg at Gondal in Gujarat, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Arrivals increased by 3,600 bags to 7,740 bags (1 bag = 45 kg), he said. "After the weekend, huge arrivals of rain-damaged seeds came to various mandis of Gujarat, including in Saurashtra and Rajkot," he said. Moreover, prices have been down since a long time due to sluggish demand of Indian groundnut and groundnut oil in the global markets, he said. Virvani believes that in long-term, groundnut prices will not gain enough support.

SOYBEAN prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 3,750-INR 4,150 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals decreased by 400 bags to 2,600 bags. "Prices have been under pressure due to sluggish demand and oversupply in domestic markets due to government's selling," Porwal said. Moreover, poor demand for Indian soymeal in global markets and high imports of soyoil by the country are weighing down on oilseed prices, he said.
