MUMBAI – Wheat prices slightly rose in Rajasthan's Kota Monday as arrivals fell because of the heatwave in the state, traders said. However, wheat prices were steady in other key markets. Prices of rice and maize were also steady from the previous day in key markets, traders said.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Kota rose by INR 10 to INR 2,460-INR 2,470 per 100 kilogram as arrivals fell and demand improved from the previous day, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals fell to 40,000 bags from 50,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) the previous day, Mehta said.
Wheat arrivals fell due to the heatwave in Rajasthan, Mehta said. He expects wheat prices to remain largely steady with a slight upward bias as there is a chance for a further fall in arrivals during the week. The India Meteorological Department Monday predicted heatwave conditions to continue over parts of west Rajasthan till Wednesday. The prediction of the heatwave has also contributed to the rise in prices, Mehta said.
On prices in the medium term, traders said they are waiting for cues from the government about the open market sales. However, a nominal price rise of around INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg is likely in wheat in Jun-Jul, they said.
Prices of wheat at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 2,740 per 100 kg, according to local trader Gaurav Kochar. Arrivals remained stable at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). Wheat prices at Vashi in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,800 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE variety remained steady at Vashi at INR 6,800 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of broken rice were also stable at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said. Prices are likely to remain at the current level and fall only when the summer crop arrivals start, Vora said.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 2,235 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are currently at their lowest and there is no scope for them to fall further, he said. While prices had declined due to higher arrivals, they will rise by about INR 200 per 100 kg from the current level as the rabi and summer maize arrivals are receding, he said. End
