MUMBAI – Futures contracts of all spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday. Turmeric prices declined due to need-based buying amid increased arrivals and a fall in spot market prices, while jeera prices were down on the arrival of the new crop from China, according to SMC Global Securities.

At 1637 IST, the most-active June contract of TURMERIC declined 1.5% to INR 13,850 per 100 kg owing to need-based buying amid increased arrivals and a fall in spot market prices, according to SMC Global. Poor export demand also weighed on prices, the brokerage said. However, lower crop estimates, reduced carryover stocks, and a 16% on-year rise in turmeric exports to 152,000 tonnes during Apr–Jan could limit the fall in prices, it said.

At 1639 IST, the most-active June contract of CORIANDER fell 0.4% to INR 7,028 per 100 kg due to limited buying, said analysts at SMC Global Securities. Poor export demand also weighed on prices. However, a weaker production outlook could provide support, the brokerage said. In the near term, coriander is likely to trade in the range of INR 6,900-INR 7,200 per 100 kg.

At 1638 IST, the most-active June contract of JEERA was down 1.8% at INR 20,690 per 100 kg, due to arrivals of new crop from China, according to SMC Global Securities. Moreover, need-based buying and lower prices in key spot markets like Unjha in Gujarat also weighed on prices, they said. Jeera arrivals typically peak during Mar-May, following the harvest of crops sown in Oct–Nov. With harvest progressing, an increase in supply is expected, which could put pressure on prices.

However, concerns of a fall in production, farmers holding back their stocks in anticipation of a price recovery and active demand from millers could limit the losses, the brokerage firm said.
