MUMBAI – Tur prices are likely to remain under pressure in the coming days as a good harvest in Myanmar has led to a $45–$50 per tonne fall in cost and freight rates over the past month, the India Pulses and Grains Association said.

Domestic supply remains healthy and prices are lower than last year due to the availability of cheaper substitutes, which could push prices further down. Farmers still hold stock, demand is weak, and the arrival of cheaper African tur is also weighing on prices, the pulses body said.

In addition, more vessels from Myanmar are expected next week. However, May deliveries are still pending, and concerns on late arrivals are already emerging about June deliveries, the association said, adding prices may rise.

However, the monsoon season may boost demand and lend some support to prices. Government procurement of around 580,000 tonnes to 600,000 tonnes could also help stabilise the market, as current prices are below the minimum support price. Additionally, the government's duty-free import policy on yellow peas ends on May 31. If import duties are re-imposed, demand could shift back to tur, potentially lifting prices, the trade body said.

Future price movement will depend on sowing progress and weather conditions, according to the association.

Last week, tur prices from Myanmar, Africa, and domestic sources declined due to low demand from traders and processors, the pulses body said. Processed tur dal prices also fell in line with raw tur. In the week ended Saturday, tur prices in Akola, Maharashtra, declined by INR 175 to INR 7,425–INR 7,450 per 100 kilogram, the association added.  End
