MUMBAI – Chana prices are likely to rise from the current levels as demand is seen higher during the monsoon season, the India Pulses and Grains Association said. Arrivals are lower at the moment as sellers are inactive at the current price levels. Hence prices are likely to rise in the coming days, the association said.

The government plans to increase procurement under the price support scheme, which could also support prices. In the 2025 rabi marketing season, the government has procured 24,000 tonnes of chana so far, which is less than 1% of the total sanctioned amount of 2.8 million tonnes.

Traders will also watch out for the government's decision on the yellow peas duty-free import policy ending May 31. If duties return, demand may shift to chana, making prices firm sooner, the association said.

In the previous week, chana prices showed a mixed trend with small changes. Trading stayed moderate due to average arrivals and cautious market mood, the trade body said. Chana dal prices showed limited price movement as summer heat, reduced demand and cheaper yellow peas were available as a substitute, it said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 25 from the previous week to INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 25 from the previous week to INR 6,025-INR 6,050 per 100 kg.

The southwest monsoon hit the coast of Kerala on Saturday, eight days ahead of the normal onset of Jun 1, the India Meteorological Department said.  End
