MUMBAI – Prices of tur declined due to increased arrivals while chana prices held steady and masur prices showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. In the short term, chana prices are expected to remain range-bound, whereas masur prices may fall as the government wraps up procurement, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, held steady at INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kilogram, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices remained unchanged due to low demand matching limited supply, a trader said, adding that this trend is likely to continue through the end of May.

Prices may temporarily rise by INR 200–INR 300 per 100 kg if the government levies import duty on yellow peas after May 31.

Currently, yellow peas are exempt from import duty. A senior government official told Informist Friday that a 10% nominal duty is under consideration, though no final decision has been made. A notification is expected next week. Yellow peas serve as a cheaper substitute for chana.

Prices of chana in Delhi were also steady at INR 5,825 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Thursday, settling at INR 7,125–INR 7,150 per 100 kg. Arrivals rose by 1,000 bags to 2,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Traders attributed the fall in prices to higher arrivals and weak demand. Farmers are offloading their crops ahead of the southwest monsoon as storing the crop during the rainy season poses risks. Exposure to continuous rainfall can add moisture to the legume, compromising quality and reducing its market value, traders said.

Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, fell by INR 76 from the previous day to INR 6,009-INR 7,153 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals rose by 512 bags to 4,326 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MASUR prices in Indore remained steady at INR 6,250-INR 6,275 per 100 kg, said Kochar. Prices are likely to fall in the near term as the government's procurement period in Madhya Pradesh ends on May 31, he said. Previously, prices had risen and stabilised in the upper range, supported by the government's procurement. The government is purchasing the legume at the minimum support price of INR 6,700 per 100 kg, which is higher than the rates prevailing in most spot markets.

Prices of the moti variety masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 5,900-INR 6,250 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur held steady at INR 6,200-INR 6,700 per 100 kg.  End
