MUMBAI - The International Grains Council has projected global food grain output at a record 2,375 million tonnes for 2025-26, slightly up from 2,373 million tonnes projected in April and 3% higher from the previous year. The increase in overall production is mainly on the expectation of higher production in the European Union, the US and Argentina, the council said in its grain market report released Thursday.

The council has trimmed its projection for global consumption in 2025-26 to 2,372 million tonnes from 2,373 million tonnes estimated in April. However, global consumption is estimated to be higher by 2% on year due to an increase in feed, industrial and food uses.

The council has projected the global carryover stocks for 2025-26 at 585 million tonnes, up from 580 million tonnes projected in April. "...Tied mainly to increased wheat shipments, total trade could reach 428 mt (million tonnes), up by 2% from the previous season."

In May, the council also raised its estimate for 2024-25 global food grain output by 7 million tonnes to 2,310 million tonnes, owing to an increase in the production of maize and wheat in Brazil and Iran, respectively. However, output will again fall short of forecast consumption, placed at 2,334 million tonnes, up 6 million tonnes from the previous projection, the council said.

RICE

World rice production for 2025-26 is seen at 541 million tonnes, slightly up from 540 million tonnes estimated in April. The council cut its estimate for 2025-26 rice carryover stocks by a million tonne to 179 million tonnes.

World rice exports are estimated at 54 million tonnes, unchanged from the previous month but up from 52 million tonnes a year ago. The council projects India's rice production at 148 million tonnes and exports at 23.9 million tonnes. However, it has reduced the consumption of rice in the country to 123.2 million tonnes from 124.2 million estimated earlier.

SOYBEAN

Boosted by larger South American crops, the 2025-26 global soybean output is tentatively estimated at a peak of 428 million tonnes, up 2% on year. The council also raised its projection for soybean trade to 183 million tonnes from 181 million tonnes the previous year. This is mainly due to more deliveries to other destinations in Asia, as well as to Africa.

WHEAT

The council has kept its 2025-26 wheat production estimate unchanged from the previous month at 806 million tonnes. However, the production estimate remains higher than 799 million tonnes seen for 2024-25. Consumption is seen slightly lower at 813 million tonnes in 2025-26 compared to 814 million tonnes pegged in April. Carryover stocks for 2025-26 are seen at 262 million tonnes, up 2 million tonnes from the previous month's estimate.  End
