MUMBAI – India imported 12,900 tonnes of pulses through the Chennai port from May 6-15, according to data released by the India Pulses and Grains Association. The collective imports of pulses from Myanmar were the highest at 11,150 tonnes, making up more than 86% of India's total imports.

 

Most of the imports comprised urad and tur shipments, primarily from Myanmar, due to a bumper crop there. Tur imports were the highest among all pulses at 6,000 tonnes, accounting for 47% of the total shipments. All the tur shipments which landed in Chennai during the period were from Myanmar, the data showed.

 

India imported 4,900 tonnes of urad during the period. The country imported 4,200 tonnes of urad from Myanmar and 700 tonnes from Brazil, according to the data. 

 

Total masur imports stood at 700 tonnes, with 450 tonnes shipped from Canada and 250 tonnes from the US, the data showed.

 

The country also imported 275 tonnes of chana from Myanmar. Imports of other pulses from Myanmar included 375 tonnes of black-eyed beans, according to the data. India imported 425 tonnes of cow peas--300 tonnes from Myanmar and 125 tonnes from Brazil.

 

During the period, 516 containers landed at the Chennai port, of which 446 were from Myanmar, the data showed.  End
