MUMBAI – Prices of all pulses were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana rose due to a temporary rise in demand, while prices of tur fell on sluggish demand, they said. Prices of urad could either remain range-bound or fall slightly in the short term amid low demand and a pause in deliveries of Myanmar imports, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 25 from Monday to INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, said Guarav Kochar, a local trader. Prices rose slightly due to a temporary rise in demand from millers, he said. However, the rise in demand is unlikely to sustain, he said. Prices of chana have been fluctuating in a narrow range for a few weeks, due to a lack of any new cues. Prices are solely dependent on how much millers will buy during a particular day, he said.
Prices could rise in the short term as arrivals of the rabi crop are expected to decline, traders said. Prices could also rise by the end of the month as millers and stockists are expected to fill up their inventories before the southwest monsoon begins in full swing, they said.
Prices of chana in Delhi also rose by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,825-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 25 from Monday to INR 7,175-7,200 per 100 kg, traders said. Arrivals in the market were steady at 1,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Demand for the legume is sluggish, with millers making need-based purchases only, they said.
Similar to chana, demand for tur is likely to rise by the end of May, or before the southwest monsoon begins, they said. However, in the medium term, prices could fall again as the market is weighing the prospects of a good monsoon, they said. A good southwest monsoon could boost the sowing of tur, which would eventually lead to a rise in supply, they said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 100 from the previous day to INR 7,200-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,275-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,000-INR 7,700 per 100 kg, it said.
Urad prices are expected to stay in the same range or fall slightly during the coming week as demand is sluggish owing to rising temperatures, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. However, many deliveries of urad imports from Myanmar are still pending, so prices may stay firm until mid-week and then ease, the association said. End
