MUMBAI – Prices of most oilseeds, including mustard seed, soybean, and groundnut, rose slightly in major markets Tuesday, traders said. However, market participants do not expect groundnut prices to continue rising in the near-to-medium term because export demand is sluggish and production estimates this year are high.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan rose by INR 50 to 6,575-INR 6,600 per 100 kg, according to the Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across India fell by 15,000 bags to 450,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

"Mustard prices are improving but at a slow pace even after government procurement," Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from Rajasthan, said. He said that in the medium term, prices are likely to gain because of less pressure from arrivals. Moreover, upcoming demand during festivals in Jun-Jul may give a further impetus to prices.

However, sluggish demand for rapeseed meal in global markets could limit gains. In April, exports of mustard meal fell to 213,023 tonnes from 230,810 tonnes a year ago, according to data from The Solvent Extractors' Association of India. Bangladesh, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam are major importers of rapeseed meal.

GROUNDNUT prices, including those of poor, medium, and best varieties, were up INR 50 at INR 4,450-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Gondal in Gujarat, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 2,000 bags to 11,760 bags (1 bag = 45 kg), he said. "Factors like arrivals of rain-damaged seeds in mandis, high production estimation, and poor export demand could limit the increase in prices of the oilseed in the medium-to-long term," he said.

Groundnut production is seen at 27.63 million tonnes in the crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun), an increase of 1.76 million tonnes from 2023-24, according to data provided by Rahul Chauhan, director of iGrain India.

SOYBEAN prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were up by INR 100 at INR 3,750-INR 4,150 per 100 kg, said Shailendra Soni, a local trader. Arrivals increased by 200 bags to 2,900 bags (1 bag = 90 kg). "Spot market prices were up on Tuesday tracking soybean futures on the Chicago Board Of Trade," he said. However, due to oversupply in domestic markets and high imports of soyoil, prices of the oilseed are not expected to gain in the long term, he said.
