MUMBAI – Wheat prices rose at Indore in Madhya Pradesh but remained steady in other key markets in the country, traders said. Prices of maize were marginally down due to increasing supply, while rice prices remained steady, they said.
Prices of WHEAT at Indore rose by INR 20 to INR 2,740 per 100 kg due to firm demand, according to local trader Gaurav Kochar. Arrivals in the market were also up at 3,000 bags from 1,300 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). Although arrivals rose, they were lower than the 5,000 bags seen at the beginning of this month, as the peak arrivals season has come to an end.
Traders expect arrivals to fall further because of the ongoing rains in the major wheat-producing states. The India Meteorological Department has predicted the rains to continue in central and parts of northwest India.
Meanwhile, prices of wheat at Kota in Rajasthan were steady at INR 2,440 per 100 kg, said local trader Aniket Mehta. Arrivals were down by 10,000 bags to 70,000 bags, Mehta said. Prices of mill-quality wheat in Delhi were steady at INR 2,730 per 100 kg, traders said. Wheat prices in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai were also steady at INR 2,800 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said.
Traders expect the government to procure around 29.8 million to 30 million tonnes of wheat during the rabi marketing season in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). The procurement of the staple grain ends on May 30. Government officials told Informist the government is likely to procure 30 million tonnes of wheat but miss the revised procurement target of 33.3 million tonnes for the season. Food Corp. of India has procured 29.6 million tonnes of wheat as of Monday, against 26.6 million tonnes procured during the previous year.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore were down by INR 5 at INR 2,240 per 100 kg as arrivals rose, Kochar said. Prices of maize at Davanagere in Karnataka were steady at INR 2,000-INR 2,200 per 100 kg. Arrivals were largely steady at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said.
Prices of the 1401 basmati RICE variety were steady in the Vashi market at INR 6,800 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of broken rice were also steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he added. Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium variety of non-basmati rice, were steady at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh at INR 5,000 per 100 kg, said local trader Ravi Shankar. End
