MUMBAI – Wheat prices rose in key markets of the country Monday owing to lower arrivals with the peak arrival season coming to an end, traders said. Prices of maize in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell slightly on higher arrivals, traders said. However, rice prices were steady.

Prices of WHEAT in Kota, Rajasthan, were up by INR 10 at INR 2,440 per 100 kg due to firm demand and low arrivals, said local trader Aniket Mehta. Arrivals were down by 20,000 bags at 70,000 bags, Mehta said. Wheat prices in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai were also up by INR 25 at INR 2,800 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said.

However, prices of mill-quality wheat at Indore were steady at INR 2,720 per 100 kg, according to local trader Gaurav Kochar. Arrivals in the market were also steady at 1,300 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). In Delhi, prices were down by INR 20 at INR 2,730 per 100 kg, according to traders.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were down by INR 5 at INR 2,245 per 100 kg as arrivals rose, Kochar said. Prices of maize at Davanagere in Karnataka were steady at INR 2,000-INR 2,200 per 100 kg. Arrivals were largely steady at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said.

Prices of the 1401 basmati RICE variety were steady at INR 6,800 per 100 kg in the Vashi market, Vora said. Prices of broken rice also held steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he added. Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium variety of non-basmati rice, were steady at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh at INR 5,000 per 100 kg, said local trader Ravi Shankar.

Since August, the Food Corp. of India has offered 7.2 million tonnes of rice under the open market sales scheme, but managed to sell just 32.3% or 2.3 million tonnes, according to official data. In an effort to speed up sales, FCI is holding auctions twice a week--on Wednesdays and Thursdays--but surplus paddy across the country continues to suppress demand. The FCI's sales will conclude by Jun. 30.  End
