MUMBAI – Tur and moong prices declined, while chana prices were steady in most key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices fell due to sluggish demand, while moong prices were weighed down due to a rise in arrivals of the summer crop, they said. Chana prices are likely to remain range-bound for the rest of the month, they said.

TUR prices at Solapur in Maharashtra fell INR 50 from Friday to INR 6,200-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. About 24–25 trucks of 20,000-25,000 kg each of tur arrived in the market, he said. Prices were weighed down by sluggish demand, he said.

Prices are expected to rise by the end of the month and the start of June as millers and stockists will look to fill up their inventories before the southwest monsoon begins in full swing, he said. However, in the medium term, prices could fall again as the market is weighing the prospects of a good monsoon, he said. "With reports of an early onset of a good monsoon, the market expects the next kharif tur crop to do well, raising hopes of a good supply which could push prices down," he said.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast above-normal southwest monsoon rainfall in the country this year at 105% of the long-period average, as neutral El Nio conditions will prevail throughout the periodThe southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 27, five days before the normal onset of Jun. 1, the weather agency said. As of Monday, the southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of the south Bay of Bengal and south Arabian Sea, the weather department said.

Prices of tur at Kalaburagi in Karnataka fell INR 40 from last week to INR 6,015-INR 7,022 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals fell by 1,134 bags to 4,380 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

CHANA prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 6,075-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Though arrivals of the rabi crop are low, the demand is muted, keeping prices steady, he said. Prices are likely to stay range-bound till the end of May, he said. Similar to tur, prices could rise when buyers stock up on the legume before the monsoon begins, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,775-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, traders said.

MOONG prices in Solapur fell INR 50-INR 100 from Friday to INR 6,400-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, said Sanklecha. Arrivals of the summer crop have risen, pushing prices down, he said. Arrivals of the summer crop have begun across states such as Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, he said.

Prices of moong at Bikaner in Rajasthan were steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,600 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
