MUMBAI – India's oilmeal exports in April rose slightly to 465,863 tonnes from 465,156 tonnes in the same period last year, according to data released by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India on Monday. However, total oilmeal exports in Nov-Apr fell 13% to 2.4 million tonnes, mainly due to decline in export of rapeseed meal and soymeal, it added.

"India harvested the record crop of soybean in kharif season and rapeseed in rabi season which encouraged higher crushing and increased availability of meal, however export demand is lacking due to disparity in international market," the SEA said. Exports of soymeal decreased to 1.35 million tonnes from 1.65 million tonnes, while those of rapeseed meal were down at 911,000 tonnes from 930,000 tonnes, it said.

Similarly, in April, exports of mustard meal fell to 213,023 tonnes from 230,810 tonnes a year ago. Bangladesh, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam are the major importers of rapeseed meal.

Exports of castor seed meal fell to 18,970 tonnes in April from 34,387 tonnes a year ago, the association said. Also, exports of castor meal were down at 152,039 tonnes in Nov-Apr compared to 193,450 tonnes a year ago.

However, groundnut meal export increased during April to 3,127 tonnes compared with 156 tonnes a year ago. During Nov-Apr, groundnut meal exports increased to 19,672 tonnes compared to 1,843 tonnes a year ago.

Soymeal exports in April rose to 230,743 tonnes from 199,803 tonnes a year ago, while during Nov-Apr these declined to 1.3 million tonnes from 1.7 million tonnes.

In April, 162,710 tonnes of oilmeal were exported from the Kandla port, against 162,352 tonnes a year ago, and a total of 118,953 tonnes were exported from the Mundra port, compared with 113,495 million tonnes a year ago, the SEA said. During the same period, exports from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai fell to 72,373 tonnes from 78,322 tonnes a year ago, the association said. Oilmeal exports from other ports during the same period stood at 106,805 tonnes compared with 107,734 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, the SEA said.

During April, India's oilmeal exports to Bangladesh fell to 50,191 tonnes from 82,878 tonnes. Oilmeal exports to South Korea were at 68,948 tonnes, down from 109,744 tonnes a year ago, the data showed. However, exports to Vietnam rose to 21,091 tonnes from 18,365 tonnes, the data showed. "Germany and France have turned out to be major importers of soymeal from India and imported 58,945 tonnes and 16,415 tonnes, respectively," the release said.

"Given the prevailing supply constraints and rising costs, India now has a valuable opportunity to regain its foothold in the Chinese market, if China relax its stringent import conditions on Indian rapeseed meal, India could emerge as a key supplier to China," the release said. Currently, international rapeseed meal prices are $308 per tonne, while Indian rapeseed meal is available at just $202 per tonne, it said. China is a major consumer of oilmeals and relies mainly on the imports from Canada and the European Union.

The association also pointed out how the availability of substitutes is dampening the demand for Indian oilmeals, both domestically and internationally. "The increasing availability and adoption of distillers dried grains with solubles or DDGS in animal feed is influencing the demand for traditional oilmeals, particularly in the cattle and poultry feed sectors. DDGS, being a cost-effective and protein-rich alternative, is being increasingly used as a partial substitute for soymeal, and rapeseed meal," the SEA said.

The following table details exports of major types of oilmeals, in tonnes, in April and Nov-Apr, compared with the year-ago numbers (in tonnes), according to the latest data from the SEA, and the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
