NEW DELHI – The government will run a 15-day campaign to increase farm productivity through Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan during pre-kharif season starting May 29 to Jun. 12, Farm Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Monday. The campaign will implement "lab to land" call by reaching out to farmers in more than 65,000 villages and 700 districts, he added.
"Record output is expected in many crops this year. That means our productivity is increasing. And we don't want to stop here. We want to increase output further," Chouhan said at the curtain-raiser event of Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan.
The agriculture ministry has estimated a record foodgrain output in 2024-25 (Jul-Jun), mainly due to record production of rice and wheat. The country's rice output this kharif season is pegged at 120.7 million tonnes, and the rabi crop is seen at 15.8 million tonnes. Wheat output is estimated at a record 115.4 million tonnes.
Chouhan hopes to increase farm productivity through the campaign by educating farmers on the use of balanced fertilisers in various crops as suggested in the soil health card. "We want to increase productivity since land holdings per farmer are less," Chouhan said. To ensure better returns to farmers, the campaign will also focus on crop diversification, mechanisation, and value addition, he added.
The campaign is also an important initiative towards "one country, one agriculture, one team", Chouhan said. The campaign will be replicated for rabi crops as well after incorporating the learnings of the kharif season, he added. Along with agricultural scientists, Krishi Vigyan Kendra experts and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research will play a crucial role in the campaign. End
