MUMBAI – Chana prices are likely to rise in the coming days owing to fewer arrivals and an expected rise in demand once the monsoon commences, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly market outlook.

However, there is uncertainty about duty-free imports of yellow peas, the pulses body said. If duty-free imports of yellow peas, a cheaper alternative to chana, continue beyond May, chana prices could decline. The government has extended the duty-free import of yellow peas by three months till the end of May.

"Traders and millers are watching the government's next decision closely, as it could affect prices in the coming months," the association said.

During the past week, chana prices declined despite a fall in rabi crop arrivals, the trade body said. The fall in prices can be attributed to slowdown in buying after the India-Pakistan tensions eased, it said. "Traders sold their stocks as the risk lessened, causing prices to fall," it said

Chana dal prices also slid because summer heat cut consumption and cheaper yellow peas were available as a substitute. In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 100 from the previous week to INR 6,200-INR 6,250 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 225 from the previous week to INR 6,125-INR 6,250 per 100 kg.  End
