India Apr-Feb spices exports up 17% YoY at 1.56 mln tn; jeera rises 60%

MUMBAI – India exported 1.56 million tonnes of spices in Apr-Feb, up 17% on year from 1.33 million tonnes exported a year ago, according to data from the Spices Board of India. Total exports of spices in dollar terms rose 8% on year to $4.17 billion during Apr-Feb. In rupee terms, exports rose 10% to INR 352.66 billion, the data showed.

 

The exports of jeera rose 60% on year to 211,143.75 tonnes in Apr-Feb, according to data. Chilli exports jumped 17% on year to 589,198.70 tonnes, the report said. The exports of turmeric rose 12% on year to 161,229.56 tonnes while those of fennel rose a whopping 98% on year to 74,586.30 tonnes. Fenugreek exports rose 47% on year at 39,851.78 tonnes and those of ginger increased 99% on year to 109,769.58 tonnes, the data showed.

 

Exports of small cardamom grew 13% on year to 5,963.82 tonnes while those of large cardamom rose 12% on year to 1,181.22 tonnes. Pepper exports grew 18% to 19,055.13 tonnes in 11 months of the current financial year. Exports of other spices, which include asafoetida, cinnamon, cassia, cambodge, and saffron remained largely unchanged at 67,089.38 tonnes, as per the report. 

 

Exports of celery were up 28% on year at 7,752.87 tonnes while nutmeg and mace exports rose 1% on year to 4,536.48 tonnes. Exports of garlic, coriander, other seeds, and mint products fell in terms of volume. Exports of coriander declined 45% on year to 54,829.73 tonnes while that of garlic slumped 50% to 35,562.24 tonnes. Exports of other seeds, which include ajwain seeds, dill seeds, poppy seeds, aniseeds, and mustard seeds, fell 16% on year to 29,939.03 tonnes.

 

Exports of mint products, which include menthol, menthol crystals, and other mint oils, declined 2% on year to 24,949.52 tonnesIndia is the largest producer of turmeric, coriander, and jeera.
