MUMBAI – India's soymeal exports in April rose 22% on year to 214,000 tonnes, The Soybean Processors Association of India said in a release Friday. However, for Oct-Apr, soymeal exports fell 13% to 1.33 million tonnes from 1.52 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA said.
India exported soymeal to more than 50 countries from October to April, with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, France, Germany, Kenya, Nepal, Netherlands, Japan, and Sri Lanka being the major buyers, according to data released by the association.
Production of soymeal in April was unchanged at 750,000 tonnes. The output in Oct-Apr fell to 5.52 million tonnes from 6.08 million tonnes a year ago, the association said. Soybean, a kharif oilseed, is sown in Jun-Jul and harvested in Oct-Nov.
Soybean arrivals in the country's spot markets were at 550,000 tonnes in April, up from 500,000 tonnes a year ago. However, like the country's soymeal exports, soybean arrivals during Oct-Apr fell to 7.75 million tonnes from 8.20 million tonnes a year ago.
"The soybean market is meal-driven," said a commodity analyst from a multinational food and agriculture company, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "With the cheaper distiller's dried grains with solubles coming in, soymeal is being replaced."
Distiller's dried grains with solubles is a by-product of the production of ethanol. Grains like corn, wheat, or rice are fermented and distilled to make alcohol. The leftover material, rich in protein, is dried and used as feed for livestock and poultry.
At the end of April, oil mills, traders, and farmers were left with around 4.8 million tonnes of soybean stock, down from 5.8 million tonnes a month ago, the association said. The meal stock at the end of April was 136,000 tonnes, against 110,000 tonnes a month ago.
Soymeal is a by-product of the extraction of oil from soybean and is primarily used as poultry and livestock feed. Indian soymeal is non-genetically modified and considered rich in protein. India is among the largest importers of soyoil and an exporter of soymeal. End
