MUMBAI – Mills in India produced 25.7 million tonnes of sugar as on Thursday in the ongoing 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) sugar season, according to the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association. The trade body has pegged the net sugar output for the current season at 26.1-26.2 million tonnes, after diversion of 3.5 million tonnes for making ethanol. Last year, the country's sugar output was 31.90 million tonnes.

As of Thursday, only 2 of the 535 sugar mills in the country were crushing cane, the association said. Both the operational factories are located in Tamil Nadu, where the main crushing season is still underway.

To augment production, several factories in South Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are expected to resume operations during the special crushing season, which typically runs from June or Jul-Sept, the association said. The special season in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu contributes approximately 400,000-500,000 tonnes during the special season, ISMA said.

As of Thursday, Uttar Pradesh produced 9.28 million tonnes of sugar. "Sugar recovery has shown improvement in the second half of the season, resulting in better output," ISMA said earlier.

In Maharashtra, sugar output was 8.1 million tonnes as of Thursday, unchanged from the amount produced during Oct 1- Apr 30. All mills in the state have wrapped up crushing operations, it said. Around 200 mills were operational in the state during this season, ISMA said.

As of Tuesday, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat produced 4.04 million tonnes, 484,000 tonnes, and 892,000 tonnes of sugar, respectively.

The season commenced with an opening stock of 8.0 million tonnes. Considering the projected domestic consumption of 28.0 million tonnes and export estimates of up to 900,000 tonnes, the closing stock is likely to be around 5.2–5.3 million tonnes, the trade body said. This reflects a comfortable buffer, ensuring that the country has sufficient sugar stock to meet domestic sugar demand, it said.

In terms of diversion towards ethanol, approximately 2.7 million tonnes of sugar have been diverted for ethanol production until Apr. 30, during the current season. An additional 600,000-700,000 tonnes are expected to be diverted over the remaining season, it said.

OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK

The association has a positive outlook for sugar production in the 2025-26 season, due to significant improvement in planting sugarcane, especially in states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka owing to favourable monsoon in 2024. Moreover, due to higher cane avaiability, "the stage is set for a timely start to the crushing season in October 2025," ISMA said.

In the northern belt, including Uttar Pradesh, varietal replacement initiatives are expected to yield tangible benefits. These efforts are expected to result in higher cane yields and improved sugar recovery rates, the trade body said.

In addition, the India Meteorological Department and the private weather agency Skymet has forecast a normal southwest monsoon in 2025, which bodes well for crop health and production, strengthening confidence in a robust and productive sugar season ahead, the association said.  End
