MUMBAI – Prices of mustard and groundnut rose in Jaipur and Gondal, respectively, while those of soybean fell in Indore, traders said. Market participants do not see major improvement coming in near-to-medium term in soybean prices due to factors like oversupply in domestic markets, sluggish demand, and high import of soyoil.
Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan rose by INR 50 to INR 6,500-INR 6,525 per 100 kg, according to the Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard across India were unchanged at 425,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
"Factors like improved buying by millers and better demand of Indian rapeseed meal from countries like China, are favouring mustard prices this week," said Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from Rajasthan. However, this improvement is at a slow pace even after government agencies are actively procuring, he said.
GROUNDNUT prices, including those of poor, medium, and best varieties, rose by INR 50 to INR 4,400-INR 5,750 per 100 kg at Gondal in Gujarat, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Arrivals increased by 1,970 bags to 11,970 bags (1 bag = 45 kg), he said. "There were good quality arrivals of groundnut on Wednesday mainly of nabar-66, a variety that is usually preferred by exporters and millers," he added. In long-term, he does not see any major improvement in groundnut prices.
SOYBEAN prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh fell by INR 150 to INR 3,800-INR 4,200 per 100 kg, said Shailendra Soni, a local trader. Arrivals rose to 2,700 bags (1 bag = 90 kg) from 1,700 bags on previous day. "Prices have been below the minimum support price of INR 4,892 per 100 kg for a very long time. Soybean prices are not expected to rise in near-to-medium term due to active selling by the government in local markets and higher soyoil imports," he said.
Crude soyoil imports during Nov-Apr rose to 2.27 million tonnes from 1.27 million tonnes same period last year, data released Wednesday by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India showed.
