MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady while prices of tur rose in key spot markets of the country on Wednesday, traders said. Prices of tur rose due to increased demand from millers. Prices of masur were steady as demand matched supply, they said.

CHANA prices in Delhi were steady at INR 5,850-INR 5,875 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,100 per 100 kg, traders said. Though there is some demand for the legume, it is not substantial enough to push prices higher, he said. Prices are likely to remain rangebound for the rest of the month as millers and stockists are keeping their purchases limited to their needs, he said.

Arrivals in the market are slowing down, so prices could rise in the short term, Kochar said. The market awaits government's decision on duty-free import of yellow peas. The government may consider allowing duty-free import of yellow peas beyond May 31 if chana prices continue to stay above the minimum support price of INR 5,650 per 100 kg to ensure adequate supply in the domestic market, a government official told Informist on May 5. Yellow pea is usually consumed as a substitute for chana.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,500-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. Around 14–15 trucks, with 20,000-25,000 kg each of tur, arrived in the market, he said. Demand from millers rose Wednesday, though it is unlikely to sustain in the short term, he said. Demand is expected to fluctuate every few days before finally rising at the end of the month, he said. "Prices will rise by the end of May, when millers and stockists will increase their purchases to fill up their inventories before the onset of monsoon," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 7,600-INR 7,700 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Ashok Nagar, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The low demand for the legume is on par with its low supply, keeping prices steady, he said. The market is receiving less arrivals as most farmers are selling their produce to the government, he said. The government is procuring masur at the minimum support price of INR 6,700 per 100 kg, higher than the rates prevailing in most spot markets.

Prices of moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,350 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of choti variety of masur in Lalitpur also held steady at INR 6,500-INR 6,800 per 100 kg.  End
