MUMBAI – Prices of mustard rose in Jaipur while those of soybean and groundnut were steady in Indore and Gondal, traders said. Groundnut prices are seen under pressure in the long term owing to sluggish export demand, damaged seeds, and high production estimates, they added.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan rose by INR 50 to INR 6,450-INR 6,475 per 100 kg, according to the Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard across India fell by 25,000 bags to 425,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

"Since April, prices are hovering around INR 6,300-INR 6,500 per 100 kg. Although prices are higher than last year, this is a slow-paced improvement even when government is actively procuring," said Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from Rajasthan. Mustard prices, on the same day last year, were in the range of INR 5,600-INR 5,675 per 100 kg.

"Looking ahead, growing Chinese demand for Indian mustard meal could lend further support to prices in the medium term. Mustard prices are likely to trade bullish in the medium-to-long term, touching INR 6,700-INR 6,800 per 100 kg," said Indrajit Paul, research head at Agrocorp International.

GROUNDNUT prices, including those of poor, medium, and best varieties, were steady at INR 4,350-INR 5,700 per 100 kg at Gondal in Gujarat, Ashok Virvani, a local trader, said. Arrivals increased by 250 bags to 10,000 bags (1 bag = 45 kg), he said. "Currently, oilseeds damaged by rains are coming to most of the mandis in Gujarat," he added.

"Huge production with higher summer groundnut sowing this year as compared to last year may push prices down," Paul said. Groundnut production is seen at 27.63 million tonnes in the crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun), an increase of 1.76 million tonnes from 2023-24, according to estimates shared by Rahul Chauhan, director at iGrain India.

SOYBEAN prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at 3,950-INR 4,200 per 100 kg, said Vijay Parashar, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 1,500 bags to 1,700 bags (1 bag = 90 kg).

"No major improvement is expected in the long term due to oversupply in various markets, sluggish demand, and higher soyoil imports," said Shailendra Soni, a local trader from Madhya Pradesh.
