MUMBAI – Production of crude palm oil in Malaysia rose 21.5% on month to 1.68 million tonnes in April, according to preliminary data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board released Tuesday. Month-end palm oil stocks and exports also increased last month, the data showed. In April, Malaysia's palm oil exports rose 9.6% on month to 1.1 million tonnes and stocks increased 19.4% to 1.87 million tonnes, the data showed.

A Reuters poll had forcast stocks in April at 1.79 million tonnes, output at 1.62 million tonnes and exports at 1.1 million tonnes. Malaysia is the world's second-largest producer of crude palm oil and India is the largest consumer of edible oils.

At 1218 IST, the most-active July contract of crude palm oil was at 3,873 ringgits (INR 75,825.32) per tonne, up 1.6% from the previous close. However, concerns about rising stock and output levels in the coming weeks may exert pressure on crude palm oil prices, Dow Jones quoted Kuala Lumpur-based trader David Ng, as saying.

Palm oil imports are expected to have fallen 24% on month to 321,000 tonnes in April, according to estimates shared by Rajesh G. Patel, managing partner at GGN Research. "This is a staggering 53% drop year-over-year, making it the lowest import level for April since 2008 and a three-month low," he said.

"Lower-than-normal palm oil imports by India, the world's biggest buyer of vegetable oils, could pressure Malaysian palm oil prices and support US soyoil futures," according to financial news organisation The Edge Malaysia.

The following table details Malaysia's palm oil output, exports, and stocks for April compared with the previous month:
