MUMBAI – Chana prices are expected to rise this week due to more purchases by millers amid higher demand for chana dal and besan during the ongoing wedding season, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in a weekly report on Monday. Demand has also risen as millers and stockists fill up inventories ahead of the southwest monsoon, it said.

Prices of chana may also be supported by a drop in arrivals of the rabi crop, and the government's procurement, the association said. The government purchased 97,013 tonnes of chana as of Wednesday, 3.5% of the approved quantity of 2.8 million tonnes.

The market will await the government's decision on duty-free import of yellow peas. The government may consider allowing duty-free import of yellow peas beyond May 31 if chana prices continue to be above the minimum support price of INR 5,650 per 100 kg to ensure adequate supply in the domestic market, a government official told Informist on May 5. Yellow pea is usually consumed as a substitute for chana.

Prices of chana rose in the week ended Saturday due to more purchases by millers at lower rates, strong demand for chana dal and besan, and weak arrivals of the rabi crop. Prices also rose as farmers refused to sell at lower rates, the association said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 150 from the previous week to INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 250 from the previous week to INR 6,175-INR 6,200 per 100 kg.  End
