MUMBAI – Prices of tur and masur rose on Friday and those of chana were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. While prices of tur rose due to firm demand from millers, those of masur were up due to low arrivals. Prices of chana are expected to rise in the short term owing to a potential drop in arrivals of the rabi crop, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 25 from Thursday to INR 7,575-INR 7,600 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices have risen due to firm demand from millers, he said, adding that they are likely to rise further at the end of the month when millers and stockists will fill up their inventories ahead of the southwest monsoon, he said.

Arrivals of the kharif crop have also reduced in the market, Gupta said. While arrivals usually drop during this time of the year, the amount has fallen further as many farmers are selling their produce to the government, he said. "Many farmers in Maharashtra are choosing to sell their crops to the Karnataka government as they are offering a bonus of INR 450 above the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg, bringing the total rate to INR 8,000 per 100 kg," he said.

The government procured 458,702 tonnes of tur as of Wednesday, more than 35% of the sanctioned quantity of 1.3 million tonnes for the 2024-25 rabi season, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from Thursday to INR 7,700-INR 7,800 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,850-INR 5,875 per 100 kg, traders said. Though there is some demand from millers, it is not substantial enough to raise prices, he said. However, with arrivals of the rabi crop slowing down, prices are bound to rise in the short term, he said.

Meanwhile, the government's procurement is progressing steadily in states such as Gujarat, Mangal said. The Centre has begun focussing on procuring chana in states where prices of the fresh crop have fallen below the minimum support price of INR 5,650 per 100 kg, in an attempt to replenish its depleted buffer stock, a senior official told Informist on Apr. 28. Prices of chana in Junagadh, Gujarat, stood at INR 4,900-INR 5,500 per 100 kg Friday, traders said.

MASUR prices in Indore rose by INR 75 from Thursday to INR 6,250-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Arrivals in the market have reduced considerably as most farmers are opting to sell their crops to the government rather than in the spot market, he said. The government is offering the minimum support price of INR 6,700 per 100 kg for the legume, which is much more attractive to farmers than the market rates. As of Apr. 22, the government has procured 51,155.4 tonnes of masur across various states.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh rose by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,750 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety of masur in Bareilly also rose by INR 50 from Thursday to INR 7,000 per 100 kg.  End
