India's pulses imports via Chennai at 25,525 tn Apr 28-May 5 - trade body

MUMBAI – India imported 25,525 tonnes of pulses through the Chennai port from Apr. 28 to May 5, according to data released by the India Pulses and Grains Association. The shipment of pulses from Myanmar was the highest at 24,550 tonnes, making up more than 96% of the total imports.

 

Most of the imports comprised urad and tur shipments, primarily from Myanmar, due to a bumper crop there. At 13,050 tonnes, urad imports were the highest among all pulses, and acounted for 51% of the total imports during the period. The country imported 12,625 tonnes of urad from Myanmar and 425 tonnes from Brazil, according to the data. India also imported 11,325 tonnes of tur from Myanmar.

 

Total masur imports stood at 550 tonnes, with 500 tonnes shipped from Canada and 50 tonnes from the US, the data showed.

 

The country also imported 200 tonnes of chana from Myanmar. Imports of other pulses from Myanmar included 150 tonnes of rajma and 250 tonnes of black-eyed beans, according to the data.

 

During the period, 1,021 containers landed at the Chennai port, of which 982 were from Myanmar, the data showed.  End
