MUMBAI – Prices of mustard were steady in Jaipur while those of groundnut and soybean fell in Gondal and Indore on Thursday, traders said. Market participants do not expect any major rise in prices of most oilseeds due to subdued demand and higher supply in the long term.

Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,225-INR 6,250 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard across India were steady at 450,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

"Prices have been hovering around INR 6,250 per 100 kg since three days. No improvement is seen as there is poor demand," said Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from Rajasthan. In mid-June, prices may improve on account of less arrivals in various markets and when festival demand picks up, he said.

GROUNDNUT prices, including those of poor, medium and best varieties, were down by INR 50 to INR 4,300-INR 5,650 per 100 kg at Gondal in Gujarat, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. "It is raining since the past three days. Hence, farmers are not bringing more oilseeds in most of the mandis," he added. Arrivals fell to 1,950 bags on Thursday (1 bag = 45 kg) from 2,000 bags on the previous day, he said. "Groundnut prices may gain some support in medium term as demand from China is improving," he added.

SOYBEAN prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were down by INR 50 to INR 3,850-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, said Shailendra Soni, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 200 bags to 3,100 bags (1 bag = 90 kg). "Prices are under pressure due to sluggish demand for soymeal as there is high availability of cheaper substitute such as distiller's dried grains with solubles which are also used as feed," he said. Distiller's dried grains with solubles is a byproduct of the production of ethanol. Grains like corn, wheat, or rice are fermented and distilled to make alcohol. The leftover material, rich in protein, is dried and used as feed for livestock and poultry.
