NEW DELHI – The government estimates India's wheat production for the crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) at 117-118 million tonnes, sharply up from its second advance estimate, which had projected the country's wheat output to hit a record 115.4 million tonnes, a top government official told Informist Thursday.

"We think our wheat production numbers will be revised upwards by the third advance estimate. While it is too soon to assess the exact production, it should roughly be 117-118 million tonnes," the official said.

Higher arrivals of wheat in the market along with higher procurement are instilling this confidence in the government. After two years of low procurement, the Food Corp. of India has made record purchases in the rabi marketing season 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). As of Tuesday, the procurement of wheat had touched 28 million tonnes, up 19% on year. The procurement is also 5.1% higher than last year's total purchase of 26.6 million tonnes. The procurement has crossed 84% of the revised target of 33.3 million tonnes for the rabi marketing season.

With two months still left for procurement in many states, government officials expect India to meet its target for the first time in three years, even after two upward revisions from the initial target of 31.3 million tonnes.

This year, the government is procuring wheat at a minimum support price of INR 2,425 per 100 kg. After two years of low stocks, which led to a significant rise in wheat prices in the market, the government is focused on filling up its granaries. The opening stock of wheat with the government as of Apr. 1 was 11.8 million tonnes, up from 7.5 million tonnes last year. This was 4.3 million tonnes above the buffer norm for Apr-Jun as it sold lesser stock in open market sales. The government wrapped up its open market sales in March with just 3.0 million tonnes offloaded, against the record 9.4 million tonnes sold in the financial year 2023-24 (Apr-Mar).  End
