MUMBAI - Prices of chana and tur rose while masur remained steady in key spot markets across the country Thursday, traders said. Prices of chana and tur rose as arrivals of both the pulses fell across markets, traders said. Masur prices were steady as both supply and demand for the legume remained subdued.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were up by INR 50 from Wednesday at INR 7,425-INR 7,450 per 100 kilogram, said Ankit Kedia. Arrivals fell by 200 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Arrivals of the legume have fallen as many farmers are selling their produce to the government instead of bringing it to the market, he said. The government is purchasing tur at the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg, which is higher than the rates being offered at spot markets.

"Arrivals of the kharif crop begin to wind up during this time of the year anyway, which helps in raising prices," he said. Though there is some demand from the millers, it is limited to only need-based purchases, he said.

The government procured 458,702 tonnes of tur as of Wednesday, more than 35% of the sanctioned quantity of 1.3 million tonnes for the 2024-25 rabi season, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs. While the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd. procured 322,739 tonnes of tur, the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd. has bought 135,963 tonnes of tur, the department said.

Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, held steady at INR 5,800-INR 7,113 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. The market saw arrival of 4,047 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the association said.

CHANA prices in Delhi rose by INR 50 from Wednesday to INR 5,900 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were up by INR 20-INR 30 to INR 5,150-INR 5,200 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader.

Demand for the legume has picked up as current lower prices are attractive for stockists, traders said. At the same time, arrivals of the rabi crop are slowing across markets, further supporting the prices. Traders expect chana demand to increase significantly by the end of May, as millers begin stocking up ahead of the southwest monsoon.

MASUR prices in Delhi remained steady at INR 5,800 per 100 kg, said Kochar. While demand for masur is low, it is on par with the arrivals, keeping prices steady, traders said. The spot market is witnessing less arrivals as most of the rabi crop is being sold to the government. The government is offering the minimum support price of INR 6,700 per 100 kg for the legume, which is much more attractive to farmers than the market rates. As of Apr. 22, the government has procured 51,155.4 tonnes of masur across various states.

Prices of moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,250 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of choti variety of masur in Lalitpur also held steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,450 per 100 kg.  End
