MUMBAI – Prices of all the pulses were unchanged in key spot markets across the country on Wednesday, traders said. Prices of chana are likely to rise by the end of May as arrivals are expected to decline. Prices of tur were steady as demand is not substantial enough to raise prices, they said. Prices of urad could be range-bound in the near term due to sluggish demand, they added.
CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals remained unchanged at 2,200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of chana in Delhi were also steady at INR 5,800 per 100 kg, traders said.
Though there is some need-based demand for chana, it is not enough to raise prices, keeping rates flat, Kedia said. However, arrivals of the rabi crop are expected to fall in the short term, which is likely to push prices higher, he said. Stockists and millers are also expected to resume bulk-buying at the end of May, before the southwest monsoon begins, he said.
The government may consider allowing duty-free imports of yellow peas beyond May 31 if chana prices continue to stay above the minimum support price of INR 5,650 per 100 kg to ensure adequate supply in the domestic market, a senior government official had told Informist. Yellow pea is usually consumed as a substitute for chana.
TUR prices in Akola were steady at INR 7,375-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Arrivals rose by 700 bags to 3,200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Millers are only making need-based purchases, which is not substantial enough for an upward trend in prices, but enough to keep them from falling, he said.
Arrivals of the legume are expected to drop as the month progresses, as more farmers are selling their produce to the government, Kedia said. With prices below the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg in Maharashtra and Karnataka, farmers from both states are more keen on selling to central nodal agencies, he said.
The government procured 458,702 tonnes of tur as of Wednesday, more than 35% of the sanctioned quantity of 1.3 million tonnes for the 2024-25 rabi season, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs. While the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd. procured 322,739 tonnes of tur, the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd. has purchased 135,963 tonnes of tur, the department said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,550-INR 7,650 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
Prices of URAD in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,275-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, according to the association. Similarly, prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,800-INR 7,500 per 100 kg. Sluggish local demand and abundant supply from Myanmar are expected to keep prices stable to weak in the near term, the association said in its weekly report Monday.
"The market is under pressure from increased imports from Myanmar," the association said. Moreover, with the upcoming summer crop in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, urad prices may remain under pressure in near term, it said. Also, shipments of urad from Brazil, which will begin from mid-June, will lead to further fall in prices of the legume, the association said. End
