MUMBAI – Rabi arrivals put pressure on prices of maize in the markets of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday, traders said. Prices of wheat and rice were steady in key markets due to lack of fresh cues, traders added.

In Indore, prices of MAIZE fell by INR 10 to INR 2,230 per 100 kilograms due to rabi arrivals, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 2,000-INR 2,200 per 100 kg and arrivals were also largely steady at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. Despite low arrivals in Karnataka, prices are likely to remain steady as rabi arrivals have started in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, he said.

Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady at INR 2,775 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 2,410-INR 2,415 per 100 kg, said local trader Aniket Mehta. Arrivals, however, fell by 10,000 bags from the previous day to 70,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mehta added.

Prices of mill-quality wheat in Indore were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Arrivals were also unchanged at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). However, prices of the grain in Delhi were up by INR 20 at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, according to traders.

As of Tuesday, the Food Corp. of India has procured close to 28 million tonnes of wheat, or more than 84% of its revised target of 33.3 million tonnes for the rabi marketing season of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). This translates to a 19% jump in procurement over the same period last year, and is over 5% higher than last year's total purchase of 26.6 million tonnes. The government revised its procurement target for the 2025-26 season twice – first from 31.3 million tonnes to 32.3 million tonnes and then by a further 1 million tonnes.

Prices of both 1401 and 1509 basmati RICE varieties were steady at INR 6,800 per 100 kg at the Vashi market, Vora said, adding that prices of the aromatic rice are likely to rise as he sees demand shifting from Pakistani basmati rice to Indian basmati rice due to ongoing tensions between the two countries.

Prices of kolam rice at the Vashi market were steady at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of broken rice also held steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he added. In Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada's Bhavanipuram, prices of sona masoori rice, a premium variety of non-basmati rice, were steady at INR 5,000 per 100 kg, local trader Ravi Shankar said.  End
