--CRISIL arm: Cost of non-vegetarian thali dn 2% on month in Apr at INR 53.9

MUMBAI – The cost of home-cooked vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian thalis fell 4% on year in April, Crisil's Market Intelligence and Analytics division said in a release Wednesday. The price of a vegetarian thali in April was INR 26.3, while that of a non-vegetarian thali was INR 53.9, it said.

The cost of the vegetarian thali fell largely on account of a 34?ll on year in the price of tomato, an 11% drop on year in potato prices, and a 6?cline on year in onion prices. Blight infestation and unseasonal rainfall in West Bengal weighed on potato prices, according to the report. Tomato prices fell to INR 21.0 per kg in April from INR 32.0 per kg a year ago, which contributed to the decrease in the cost of the vegetarian meal.

The fall in the cost of the non-vegetarian thali was driven by an estimated 4% on-year decline in the price of broiler chicken, which accounts for around 50% of the cost of a non-vegetarian thali. "The dip in broiler prices was on account of oversupply and lower demand amid bird flu reported in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka," according to the release.

A 19% on-year jump in vegetable oil prices due to a rise in import duty in September and a 6% on-year rise in the price of liquefied petroleum gas cylinders curtailed a further decline in the cost of both thalis, according to Crisil.

Month on month, the cost of vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis fell by 1% and 2%, respectively, in April, the Crisil division said. A 2% and 14% on-month fall in potato and onion prices, respectively, contributed to the dip in the cost of the thalis. However, tomato prices rose by 1% on month. Due to an estimated 2% on-month decline in broiler prices, non-vegetarian thali prices declined.

A vegetarian thali comprises roti, vegetables such as onion, tomato, and potato, rice, dal, curd, and salad. A non-vegetarian thali has the same elements except for dal, which is replaced by chicken. The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east, and west India, according to the release. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common person's expenditure, it added.

"Going forward, wheat and pulses prices are expected to moderate amid strong domestic output," said Pushan Sharma, director of research at Crisil Intelligence. "Edible oil prices are also likely to soften over the next 2–3 months as global supplies pick up, mainly from Argentina, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Rice prices, though, are expected to inch up with a projected increase in exports. And among vegetables, onion prices are likely to be rangebound while tomato prices are forecast to rise on account of seasonality."  End
