MUMBAI – Wheat prices rose in most markets Tuesday as arrivals in local markets fell with the peak season nearing its end, traders said. Maize prices fell in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, because of pressure from rabi arrivals. Prices of rice remained unchanged due to a lack of new cues, traders said.

Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market rose by INR 25 to INR 2,775 per 100 kg as arrivals pressure in local markets has reduced, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. The recent rains in wheat-growing states such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh have also restricted farmers from getting the grain to markets, Vora added.

Wheat prices also rose in Rajasthan's Kota by INR 5-INR 10 to INR 2,400-INR 2,410 per 100 kg, said local trader Aniket Mehta. Arrivals were steady as compared to the previous day at 80,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. However, arrivals were low compared to the 150,000-200,000 bags seen a week ago.

Prices of mill-quality wheat in Indore were steady compared with the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Arrivals rose to 2,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg) from 700 bags on the previous day. However, prices of the grain in Delhi were down by INR 5 at INR 2,680 per 100 kg, according to traders.

Prices of the 1401 basmati RICE variety at Vashi market held steady at INR 6,800 per 100 kg, and those of the 1509 variety remained steady at INR 6,800 per 100 kg, Vora said. He said prices of the aromatic rice are likely to rise as he sees demand at current levels.

Prices of kolam rice at Vashi market were steady at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of broken rice also held steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he added. In Vijayawada's Bhavanipuram, prices of sona masoori rice, a premium variety of non-basmati rice, were steady at INR 5,000 per 100 kg, local trader Ravi Shankar said.

Despite the government's move to allow rice exports, traders do not see rice prices rising as there is huge stock of the grain at ports, in the domestic markets, and with the government, traders said. Prices are likely to remain lower because of subdued demand and ample supply in domestic markets, Vora said.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore fell by INR 20 to INR 2,240 per 100 kg, Kochar said, adding that pressure from rabi arrivals has weighed on prices. Prices of maize in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,000-INR 2,200 per 100 kg and arrivals were also largely unchanged at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. Despite low arrivals in the state, prices are likely to remain steady as rabi arrivals have started in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, he said.  End
