MUMBAI – Prices of all the pulses were steady on Monday, traders said but added that rise in imports of tur and urad from Myanmar will lead to a fall in prices in the near term.
Prices of TUR in Maharashtra's Akola were steady at INR 6,350-INR 6,375 per 100 kg, local trader Ankit Kedia said. Arrivals in Akola were around 2,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 500 bags from the previous day, he said. "Sluggish procurement by the government along with poor demand for the legume in summer and high import quantity from Myanmar, are putting pressure on tur prices," he said.
"Tur imports from Myanmar are expected next week. This is in addition to around 400 full containers already being at the port," according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
Prices of CHANA in Akola were stable at INR 6,000 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Arrivals fell by 1,500 bags to 2,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. "Millers are purchasing cautiously and not doing bulk buying on lower demand for chana dal and besan," he said. Chana prices are under pressure due to availability of cheaper substitutes like yellow peas, he said.
Chana prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 5,750-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a trader from the state. "Government has to procure in large quantities in order to support chana prices, especially during summer," he said. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation had procured 10,385 tonnes of chana as of Apr. 22, 0.4% of the 2.7 million tonnes it aims to buy during the 2024-25 rabi season under the price support scheme, according to data provided by the federation.
URAD prices in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,000 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Similarly, in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, urad prices were steady at INR 7,225-INR 7,250 per 100 kg, as per association.
"The market is under pressure from increased imports from Myanmar," the association said in its weekly report. Moreover, with the upcoming summer crop in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, urad prices may remain under pressure in the near term, it said. Also, shipments of urad from Brazil, which will begin from mid-June, will lead to further fall in prices of the legume, the association said.
Prices of the moti variety of MASUR were steady at Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh at INR 6,475-INR 6,500 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Prices of the choti variety of masur were steady at INR 6,900 per 100 kg. End
